A pupil was found in the possession of a weapon on Thursday the 3rd of March at Milne's High School in Fochabers.

The weapon was later reported to have been a kitchen knife and the pupil has now been charged by police.

Parents (the editor of Around Moray included) received a email from the school on the 11th of March explaining what had happened and how the incident was handled from Head Teacher Trish Cameron.

Many online newspapers this morning are reporting the school took a week in telling parents of the incident.

I (the editor) and parent don't know of anyone who has expressed concerns about the handling of this incident as reported elsewhere.

For clarity (non edited) the letter to parents read as follows:

Dear Parent

I write to make you aware of an incident on Thursday 3 March involving a pupil who brought a weapon to school.

This matter was dealt with in an appropriate and timely manner after a responsible pupil reported it to staff and in accordance with local authority procedures and guidance.

I can reassure you that our main priority was the safety of our young people and that no-one was harmed.

As was the case with all other secondary schools in Moray, pupils in Milne’s High School were made aware of the implications of carrying weapons through a series of assemblies conducted by Police Scotland late last year. We will continue to remind our young people of these and of the serious consequences for them should they be found on school premises in possession of such weapons.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Yours sincerely

Trish Cameron

Head Teacher.

The Editor of Around Moray and Parent said:

I personally think Milne's High School handled the incident involving a pupil with a knife brilliantly.

If Milne's had released a statement to parents the day of the incident you would have seen mass panic and a witch hunt for the pupils name.

leaving it a week before informing parents would have gave the police time to carry out a proper investigation without mass hysteria.

The School in my opinion handled the situation quickly and responsibly.

If it had resulted in injury or god forbid something worse we would have been notified right away.

It's a shame some online and paper journalists have printed such negative comments about a head teacher who in my opinion handled the situation impeccably.
