DUFFTOWN HIGHLAND GAMES 124 YEARS AND OUT?

The Dufftown Highland games is under threat.

Dufftown has had a Highland games since 1892 but this could all becoming to an end if more people don't come forward and join the committee.

The games are most certainly popular with a growing crowd in recent years of up to 5000 spectators, many of which come from overseas to enjoy the traditional game which has a positive impact on the local economy.

But despite its popularity and boost to the local economy, locals are very reluctant to help organise the event.

Linda Brown, chairwoman of the games committee, said there had been a disappointing turnout for the annual general meeting.

"There were insufficient numbers to form a full committee, and in particular the treasurer’s position is vacant. This is a key role to ensure the smooth running of the games.

"Some long-standing members and office-bearers are stepping back while remaining on the committee, which is an ideal opportunity for new members to draw on their knowledge and experience.

"We are very fortunate that we have a loyal and committed team of helpers who turn out every year to help with setting up and various tasks on games day, but they need the support of a full committee in dealing with the preparatory work."

She added that everything was in place for this year’s event on July 30, with 13 bands already signed up to take part in the spectacular massed pipe band beating the retreat at the end of the day.

But there is a real danger that the 125th anniversary games next year will not go ahead.

"We need more than the four or five people who regularly come to meetings - we need about 16 for a full committee," said Ms Brown. "The 125th is a major anniversary and celebration, and we need to start planning for that now. We can’t do that with the numbers we have at the moment."
