Political Blogger Peter Bell Comes to Elgin to Speak with members of the Moray Common Weal.

Common Weal Moray's series of discussion events continues in April with the arrival of Peter A Bell. A full time political blogger and social media commentator, Peter has carved a name for himself with his no nonsense, straight to the point dissection of all media outlets' reporting of major (and not so major) news stories. A writer who takes no prisoners and pulls no punches when it comes to despinning, Peter has written extensively for online and print publications and has worked with numerous groups helping to organise a variety of events. Having formerly worked in the field of Corporate Imaging, Peter has now dedicated himself to the cause of restoring Scotland's independence and to the development of what he calls "a better politics".

Peter describes himself as being resigned to EU membership rather than enthusiastic about it. He contends that the whole EU debate is little more than an overblown internal dispute within the Conservative party driven almost entirely by the anti-immigration lobby. He maintains that this debate has little significance in the context of the UK and is almost entirely irrelevant to Scotland. He warns against the danger that the EU referendum will both overwhelm the Scottish General Election and become too closely associated with a second independence referendum.

The topic that will be covered at the April meeting is titled "The EU referendum: is it Scotland's fight?" and will focus on his contention that this is a debate that no one wanted other than factions within the Conservative Government in Westminster and that, while remaining in the EU may not be a hugely popular option, leaving offers no benefits whatsoever.

Peter will be in Elgin speaking to members of the Common Weal at the Drouthy Cobbler on Tuesday 12th April. Doors will open at 7pm and entry is free, although donations are gratefully received.

This is Common Weal Morays 3rd discussion event of this year, previous attendees have included Richard Lochhead, Robin McAlpine and Councillor Graham Leadbitter.

Common Weal Moray is the Moray branch of the Common Weal Scotland, a think and do tank committed to researching and arguing for alternative ways of running society with the aim of creating an all of us first culture.
