NHS Grampian is supporting Deaf Awareness Week (2-8 May) and as part of this, four staff have performed a signed version of a well known song, and posted it, inviting viewers to identify the song.

Roda Bird, NHS Grampian Equality & Diversity Assistant, signed the song in British Sign Language (BSL) with Olive Davies (Project Manager), Morag Richard (Clinical Support Worker) and Lynsey Logue (Occupational Therapist).

Roda said:

“We wanted to do something special to raise awareness about Deafness and British Sign Language. We also want to show that learning BSL as a new skill can be fun and enjoyable. Our tutor Gerry Malley, who is very patient and encouraging, has shown us videos of songs being signed. We hope that this video raises awareness of our commitment to work with people who are deaf or have a hearing loss to ensure they have equal access. The video has reached more than 7,000 people on Facebook, Youtube and Twitter and have gathered very positive comments.”

A display about Deaf Awareness Week can be seen at the Rotunda entrance of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary during this week.
